RE: Additives

Not to be disrespectful to anyone within these boards, but here is a question I ask myself 3 times a wk.
Why would ANY of the so called engineers or Manufactures endorse a product or products that would prolong the life of thier equiptment? They would have to be total Dee Ta Dee's to do that. They would lose more money then what they already are.
Or maybe im just one who looks way outside the box? Who's to Say? and to think the last 3 #'s of my social security number is 666. Ya Baby!

RE: Additives

Marty: It will never stop!!!
I for one see it this way. Do I beleive anything that the Top 10 Fuel Companies Tell Me? H3LL No!! Whether it be on a CD or some sort of Goober Document. They are only going to put out, what they want the general public to know. Even it is an approved document by our government or congress. Do I beleive them? LoL! Not by know means.
It's all about --->SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!
This is why i love this country, we are still allowed a choice.
I use 1 additive, and it has proven to myself that it keeps my fuel system clean and running smooth. Which saves me money at the pump.
One major plus--> Saves me thousands of dollars from having to replace injectors.
Have a Nice Day Everyone.

RE: fuel addtives

Goodcruisin: That was the study that i watched closely for months. Spicer did a great job. Thus the reason for me using SoyPower. After 2 plugged fuel filters and 9 months of use. The soypower has cleaned my fuel system up. Thus slightly quieting down the 7.3L injectors.
For those even interested--> I use 10oz-per 30 gal.

RE: Engine oil additives-anyone use ? Worthwhile?

The only oil additives that I have used and would recommend. It's not really an additive though is Auto-Rx & LC20 from Lube Control.
www.auto-rx.com
www.lubecontrol.com
Other then Auto-Rx & LC20 I wouldn't add anything.
My 7.3L PSD was somewhat sludged up, thanks to the previous owner and his bad maintance habits. After 2 Cleaning phases of Auto-Rx and 10oz of LC 20 with every oil change. I removed the valve covers and found the springs and rocker arms sludge free, even most of the varnish was gone. Each Cleaning Phases was 2,500 miles. New Filters added also. Cut open both filters, it's hard to imagine all that nasty goo was within the 7.3L. A clean motor is a smooth healthy running motor.
This is just my personal experience.

RE: Which Oil

I have a question: When does most engine wear occur? I have always believed that it occured at start up. Thus I have always used a lighter weight grade of oil. Now-->I own a F250 7.3L PSD with 267K miles on her. I just switched over to a 5w-40 syn last winter. For the simple fact, it will flow much faster no matter what Temp. And help almost eliminate sludge and varnish. I can honestly say, the 7.3L cranks and fires up in almost half the time on the 5W-40 compared to the 15w-40. Which means the 7.3L is getting oil so much faster through out the motor. How do I know? My motor wont even fire unless the Injectors are getting oil pumped through them.
I have no clue which oil is best, that debate will go on forever.
I just tried to figure out where most wear takes place. And find an oil that can help me address that situation.
And Yes oil filtration is probably the most important. Find a filter that filters the best with the least flow restriction. Amsoils EaOs are amoung the best.-->{Spin Ons}.
I also feel the general base stocks within all oils are similar, it's the additive packages that makes the Oil. Synthetics have different base stocks but thats another can of worms.
I just would like to know your opinions on when U think most wear within a motor takes place.

RE: Transmission Coolers

John Wayne has a very good idea. Most will be suprised, how hot their fluid does get while towing. {Esp}on those hot summer days.
For those that tow only a few miles, say 5 to 20 miles.
Over 20 miles? Think about a gauge then make the decision.
If I recall: below 200 deg is normal and Ok.
above 200-210->getting hot
225-230deg don't get in this zone.
If so? Don't stop and shut the engine off. Pull over and let the truck idle till temp drops to normal temp.
My 2 cents: If you tow alot--->Pour in a Name brand synthetic trans fluid along with a remote by-pass filtering system, and a larger trans cooler. -->Equals to a very long transmission life. My trans pan has a drain plug. I just drain the pan->Holds 2 gallons, and replace the spin-on Baldwin filter-->Every other January.
My tranny runs between 185 and 195 normal. When pulling our 5th->temps are between 200 and 215 on hot days 100+. I've never come close to 225deg but I've never pulled in the Mountains or through major hilly country.

RE: Diesel upgrades and mileage

I agree 100%. I was just informing Doug, what the magazine did. I myself would not increase tire size just to try to gain MPG. They don't have to pay for the mods, like you and I so they are trying everything.
I would like to say, they are not making the ultimate tow vehicle! But all these mods will help your mpg while towing. Except for maybe the tires. I myself might go for a wider footprint while keeping the stock height.

RE: Differential Heat

I agree with smk: If your going to be towing a heavy load and often? I would invest in a finned cover with a drain plug. That way, every 20 to 40K miles you can just drain the oil and add new. Without removing the whole cover, kind of a nice feature. But yes pour in a Top Name Brand 75W140 synthetic Gear Oil.
If your not going to be towing often? smk gives ya good advice.

RE: Diesel upgrades and mileage

Doug: If your still following this thread. If you can find this months Diesel World Magazine. They have been doing a project MPG with a 04 F250 SD 4x4-->6.0L They started out averaging 17.2 mpg.
They changed all fluids to Royal Purple{Synthetic}.
Upgraded to a Magnaflow turbo back system exhaust.
Airaid Intake system.
Added Xzillaraider programmer from Quadzilla
Tonneau Cover.
Just with these mods, the truck went from 17.2 mpg to 23.92 mpg.
Thats a gain of 6.72 mpg.
They increased hp from 250 at the rear wheels to 411hp.
This month they took the stock tires-->255/75R16's and replaced them with 305/70R16. Which took the overall tire dia from 31.1 in to 32.8, which was a 1.7 in increase. This change messed with the speedometer a bit and gave the speed error of 5.6% Which means the speedometer is reading 5.6% low. The tire change brought the total slightly over 24mpg.
To me this is kewl... What other auto besides a diesel, can gain this much HP and Torque and gain MPG. Plus make your truck that much more fun to drive.
This MPG experiment is still ongoing. Just wanted to share this info with ya.

RE: Diesel upgrades and mileage

To a fellow Ford owner: If you have time? Visit a couple of Good Ford Forums--->
www.dieselstop.com
www.powerstroke.org
2 places where many many ford owners go to talk and ask questions such as yours and many more questions.
I have saved so much money by visiting these 2 sites. By doing the work myself, instead of taking it to the dealership or a mechanic.
If your even thinking about a more power? Visit Dp-tuner.com.
Jody can custom burn you a program for your own person driving habits.
The main thing in my mind is-->You can gain more hp-Way more Torque and not suffer any MPG loss. Many have reported a 2 to 3 mpg gain with jody's flashes and programs. Tony Wildman is another programmer that is top notch. Both specialize in Fords. These trucks are amazing with only a few hundred dollars invested. -->{In the right places}. Good Luck.

RE: CA-40 Fuel Additive?

For those that care about what they pour into your diesel fuel tank.
This might be worth reading. Those that don't care or are skeptical about diesel additives don't bother. This was a very intense study done by Spicer and a alot of companys. Here is the UrL
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177728
Granted this is just a test on diesel fuel Lubricity Additives. Which lubricate your fuel pump and injectors. To Me! Important Stuff.

RE: CA-40 Fuel Additive?

Just to pass on info on a great product. Made from soybean oil for us diesel owners. This is one product that does what it says. http://www.soyclean.biz/shopping/productsdetail.asp?cat=DFA
I have been adding soypower to my diesel for 2 yrs now. Stock injectors are still in as well as the fuel pump. My 01 has 266k miles. It actually quieted down the noisy 7.3L. About 14k miles ago my wire harness under my valve covers come loose. Took it to my mechanic to have the harness changed out, while the truck was in, I had him pull a few injectors just to look at them. He was shocked to see how clean they were as well as how good of shape they were in. Was that due the soypower and M1 5w-40? Hmmm I will stick with what works.
Just wanted to share what works for me.

RE: Why are Powerstroke Diesels so Loud

Nothing like the sound of a 7.3L with a 4" or 5" turbo back straight piped exhaust!!! Gives a guy a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Reason being my wife loves driving my truck as well.
my mpg seems to go out the window when this happens though.

RE: What F350 programmer

Jody Tipton @ DP-tuner.com can customize 1 or many hp settings for your needs. My Idea for my 7.3L will be Jodys Hi Idle tune-80hp economy-60hp tow. High Idle is for those cold mornings-80hp economy is for around town plus highway-60hp tow is for pulling the 5th. Yes, and keep the stock tune. He has many more custom tunes to chose from.
You can vist thedieselstop.com and talk to all the ford fellas.
It is so easy to call him, and just tell him what you drive and what you expect.
After I replace my trans, I will give jody a call. His 40hp tow and 60hp tow will eat my trans now with 266k miles on her.
Tony Wildmans work is top notch as well!!!
Either of these 2 fellas will make your F350 come to life, as well not hurt your mpg. Only U can do that. You will have a hard time keeping your foot out of it.
